Em and Jon’s Wedding

1st. September 2007

The Food Log (Flog!): "Ooh, we had a lovely meal"

This started as a giggle for the benefit of Jon's dad, Dave. No matter where he's been, he can remember what he ate, bless him. Now we realise the food's a big part of travelling around the US, and it helps us remember each day of this trip of a lifetime.

Disclaimer: we have to clarify at this point that while we are served these enormous portions, we very often don't finish them! It's the American Way.

Of course, that doesn't apply to the sushi.

Day 24: dinner at Sam Adams restaurant in JFK airport - nice wings, crap service

We had plenty of time to scope out the duty free then settle down for a beer and wings in the Sam Adams restaurant at the airport. Hah!

We got our beer and ordered our meal. Then we waited and waited and waited. After a while I found the waitress and asked her where are order was. “Oh” said she, “there was a problem”.

“Oh” said I, “How much longer will it take to sort this problem (ie heat wings and a burger)? We have a plane to catch”. She said she would chase it up. After seeing several people arrive, sit, eat and leave, I thought I’d ask again, but this time I found the manager who said he would find out. I said that was good, but could he please let us know as we had come to the airport with the express hope that we would catch our plane.

Eventually the waitress came and told us that they had mislaid the order in the kitchen (funnily they hadn’t ‘mislaid’ the bill). I said that if the food did not come in 5 minutes then we would leave and not pay for the beer. Sure enough the food arrived, we asked for the bill and wolfed down our grub. The bill was for the full amount so I said to the waitress that we would not be paying all of it . She returned the bill with 25% knocked off and we very nearly missed our plane.

Shame really because this was our last meal in the States and up until then we’d had great service.

Day 24: breakfast at Friendly’s again

So we liked it enough to go back for a second go! This time we both had the egg and bacon sandwich with home fries. And lots of coffee to make us wake up.

Day 23: dinner Chez Blackmore, Clinton

Well, this was just fantastic. Catching up with old friends at their lovely home, meeting their bright-as-buttons daughters and chatting away till the early hours. What a great way to round off the trip. When we got in the car to drive back to the hotel (Em had very kindly volunteered to drive - thank you!) all I needed to say was “I told you you’d like them”.

This is a first: the flog has a direct feedback mechanism! The Blackmores had read about our foodie exploits so far, and decided that what we needed was some light fish and fresh veggies and salad. Oh, they were so right. Yum. Salmon, new spuds, salad and (for me, anyway) the star of the show: broccoli salad with a sweet red vinegar dressing with raisins and sunflower seeds.

Day 23: lunch at Wood’s in Plymouth

When we were buying tickets for the Mayflower, I asked the bloke which he thought is the best seafood restaurant. He recommended Wood’s and when we got there it looked like a rundown shack, but we went with it. Oh my - we ordered a clam chowder (I have a taste for that now) and a lobster bisque. It was delicious.

What did make us laugh was the menu which offered fish and chips - look at what they serve it with…..!

Day 23: breakfast at Friendly’s in Westborough

Mmm, mmm, mmm. For a regular diner the breakfast was pretty good. I had a grilled bacon and cheese sandwich and Em had a something combo - a bit like an English breakfast. The kind of English breakfast we won’t be having in England for a good while…..

The only quibble with this place is the size of the portions is ridiculous: look how much we left….

Day 22: lunch at dinnertime in the hotel

We got back from Boston quite late so made a sandwich and had one of our now legendary bed picnics. It consisted of bread, Port Salut cheese and pastrami. And BEER. A strange mixture, but it worked!

Day 22: dinner for lunch at Uno, Cambridge, MA

We wandered round the hallowed streets of Cambridge and ended up in Uno, a Chicago grill. Our choices were limited because we left it so late to eat lunch and most places had not started the dinner menu. However, we ordered clam chowder, which was just delicious.

We decided to make this our main meal so ordered a main course of chicken quesadillas and a shrimp and crab fondue. As we both tend to like the same thing we often order dishes to share, which can get messy. My fave was the fondue! We also had a beer as it was so hot outside (at least 79F).

Day 22: breakfast at the hotel in Westborough

We were organised and bought breakfast fixings the night before. So we had a bed picnic of coffee and croissants. We ate with our fingers rather than trying to wrestle with wabby knives and forks - it’s good to use what you’ve been given.

Day 21: dinner in the Picadilly pub, Westborough, Massachusetts

We finally arrived in Westborough after much swearing (see main blog). Too tired to go any further we went to the pub near the hotel and ordered jambalaya which was ok, but could do better. Oh and we also had BEER and wine.

Day 21: lunch from a sushi place and a sandwich place, maybe in NH

This is the first meal where we’re not sure which state we were in . We came off the interstate and drove in to a shopping plaza - it could have been New Hampshire or it could have been Maine. Nonetheless Jon was happy because he found a little sushi place so I left him with his sushi while I went to get a sandwich. He’d almost scoffed it by the time I got back as you can see from the photo - he’s a real sushi junkie!
